Windows 8 has officially been confirmed for release on the 26th October 2012. The new operating system from Microsoft will be available on laptops, desktops, smartphone & tablets, including Microsoft’s own Surface tablet device. Windows 8 has made some radical changes from its predecessors, signalling one of the biggest Windows OS changes to date. Other enhancements include the operating system’s ability to support UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) secure boot. Emerging Technologies Open Day - KC Stadium, Hull - 20th September

On September 20th, Hull-based IT specialists Genesis Business Systems are hosting an open day, where Microsoft will be heading the rota of national heavyweights and demonstrating its new operating system.

Luke Pykett, marketing manager at Genesis, said: "We've worked really hard to secure some exciting presentations from the biggest software and technology providers at the moment." 

 

Mr Pykett said the star attraction on the day, which is being held at the KC Stadium, will be Microsoft's partner technology advisor, Ted Schultz, who will present Windows 8, viewed as the biggest leap for the software giant in more than a decade, Office 2013 and the new Surface tablet.
Mr Schultz will be educating business users on the exciting features available in Windows 8 – a month before the release – including the touchscreen-enabled interface and he will also providing his thoughts on 'Where IT is going'.

Presentations from HP will follow, showing its latest notebook and tablet business solutions.
Pegasus software, Spindle Pro, Qlikview, Sophos and Dell Sonicwall will also demonstrate how the latest products and technologies can benefit your business.

The day will end with KC presenting its new fibre optic, lightning-speed broadband, Lightstream, which has begun to roll out across the region.
KC's Lee Hampston, who will be presenting at the open day, said: "Since we launched KC Business Lightstream, we've connected more than 150 customers to the service and their feedback has been fantastic.
"I'm looking forward to sharing all the details of Lightstream and the benefits it's delivering to local businesses."

Genesis will also take to the stage to discuss how mobile app development can be utilised for businesses with tablet and smartphone devices.

Mr Pykett said: "We really feel now is the time for it.
"That's why we've called it the Emerging Technologies open day."

On the day there will be prize giveaways, including an iPad 3 up for grabs.

There is also chance to pre-register for Windows 8 on the day.

Pegasus Real Time Information (RTI)

In April 2013, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is introducing a new way of reporting PAYE: Real Time Information (RTI).

RTI is being introduced to improve the operation of PAYE, making it easier for you, the employer, to operate PAYE. Employees will receive the information more quickly and it will help support the introduction of Universal Credits.

What is PAYE RTI?

RTI will ensure that the PAYE system meets the needs of the 21st century and will make it easier for employers, pension providers and HMRC to administer PAYE. Under RTI, employers and pension providers will tell HMRC about PAYE payments at the time they are made - as opposed to how it is done today, at the end of the financial year.

With the forthcoming HMRC RTI system, employers will be required to send data about PAYE, NIC and student loans every time they pay an employee, rather than just once a year with the end-of-year return. Payroll software will collect the necessary information and sent it to HMRC online. All Pegasus payroll solutions* will be ready for RTI in February 2013.

Introducing Surface by Microsoft

The 10.6-inch Surface will have 2 verisons - Windows RT and Windows 8 Pro models will be available soon.

Both models will feature 10.6-inch ClearType HD displays, multi-touch keyboards that double as a magnetically attached cover, and front and rear cameras. Other hardware specs vary between the two devices.

The Pro version is powered by an Intel Core i5 processor chip and runs the full desktop edition of Windows 8, as well as the Metro operating system for mobile devices. It also supports microSDXC, USB 3.0, Mini DisplayPort Video, a 2x2 MIMO antennae, and both stylus and touch-screen interfaces.

Weighting in at 903g, the Pro model is 13.5mm thick and comes with either 64GB or 128 GB of internal storage on board.

The Windows RT edition is powered by an ARM CPU and is thinner and lighter than its more powerful counterpart, weighing 676g and measuring in at 9.33mm thick.

It does not support the full version of Windows 8, but comes with a raft of pre-installed apps and first-party software such as Internet Explorer. The device also sports microSD, USB 2.0, Micro HD Video, and a 2x2 MIMO antennae. Both 32GB and 64 GB versions will be released.

In 2002 Microsoft introduced its Support Lifecycle policy based on customer feedback to have more transparency and predictability of support for Microsoft products.

WHY IS SUPPORT ENDING FOR WINDOWS XP SP3 AND OFFICE 2003?

Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 will go out of support on April 8, 2014, if your organization has not started the migration to a modern PC, you are late. Based on historical customer deployment data, the average enterprise deployment can take 18 to 32 months from business case through full deployment. To ensure you remain on supported versions of Windows and Office, you should begin your planning and application testing immediately to ensure you deploy before end of support.

WHAT DOES END OF SUPPORT MEAN TO YOU?

It means you should take action. After April 8, 2014, there will be no new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options or online technical content updates.

Running Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 in your environment after their end of support date may expose your company to potential risks, such as:
