XP Users Facing Cut In Microsoft Support
Did you spot in our article in the Hull Daily Mail business section today?
"A HULL IT company is warning businesses to take action as Microsoft prepares to end support for some of its most popular software. Microsoft will end support for Windows XP, Office 2003 and email software Exchange 2003 on April 8.
"A HULL IT company is warning businesses to take action as Microsoft prepares to end support for some of its most popular software. Microsoft will end support for Windows XP, Office 2003 and email software Exchange 2003 on April 8.
Genesis Business Systems, a Microsoft partner based in Goulton Street, is now offering free consultations to discuss migration requirements to ensure firms are ready for the deadline. After April 8, the IT giant will seize security updates for both Windows XP and Office 2003. Customers will also no longer be able to access support for the software.
Luke Pykett, marketing manager at Genesis, said: “A lot of businesses are simply unaware of the changes that are coming into effect and that, to us, is concerning.
“We are getting more and more people coming to us and asking for our support to help make the migration across to newer systems as there are a lot of businesses still using XP.“Because the support and security updates from Microsoft cease, businesses that are operating using XP will be at serious risk after from April 8.
“Windows XP is 12 years old and is the second most popular operating system worldwide and as a Microsoft partner we are offering free consultations to businesses to get them up to date and limit the risks associated with the change.
As every business system is different, we need to start looking at requirements moving forward sooner rather than later”
According to Microsoft, more than 30 per cent of the Small and Medium Business (SMB) market are still running Windows XP and Office 2003, with only 55 per cent of SMBs aware of the End of Support (EOS).
Mr Pykett said: “As more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimise for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter greater numbers of applications and devices that do not work with Windows XP, Office 2003 and Exchange 2003.”
Microsoft is already warning businesses that have not started the migration to a modern desktop that they are “late”.
A spokesperson for Microsoft said: “Based on historical customer deployment data, enterprise deployment can take months from business case through to full deployment.
“To ensure you remain on supported versions of Windows and Office, you should begin your planning and application testing immediately to ensure you deploy before end of support.”

Pegasus Software announce end of support with Windows XP and Office 2003
As you will be aware Microsoft are ceasing support for Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 on 8 April 2014. After this date there will be no new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options or online technical content updates.
Therefore, Pegasus will not support Windows XP or Office 2003 after 31 January 2015 with any Pegasus product. Furthermore, should any of the third party tools Pegasus use within their software, render the running of an XP machine inoperable, support would have to cease earlier than scheduled.
For Opera II customers, the end of support is an ideal time to take advantage of a new operating system, and also to take the next step and upgrade to Opera 3 at the same time to future proof your business.

It’s all about the App for a slick business operation ...
As technology evolves, so must businesses. The days of mounds of invoices, dossiers of customer records and Narnia-like filing systems are seemingly over. So too are complicated IT and operating systems thanks to the rise of apps –easy-to- use software applications for mobile tablets and smartphone devices. And for one Hull company, the growth of the app market has changed the face of its business.
Genesis Business Systems, based in Goulton Street, tapped into the app revolution about four years ago after recognising the opportunity apps presented for its customers and invested in the expertise of its development team to meet this challenge. Chris Cook, software development manager at Genesis, said: “With the high level of experience we have in developing apps for business, we are able to provide app-based solutions that can deliver significant benefits to our customers and are far more effective than the basic apps other software companies are offering. “Businesses today are looking for every opportunity to improve how they operate and more effectively connect with their customers, and apps are a great way to do this. “Since we first started providing app-based solutions, the demand for apps has grown enormously to the point where about 70 per cent of the development projects we deliver today have a mobile app element in them. “There has been a need for this level of technology for a while now and businesses are wisely realising the potential that well designed apps can offer. “In developing apps that are easy to use and offer real commercial benefits, we can enhance businesses and make them as versatile and as efficient as possible.”
Genesis Business Systems was set up in 1986 to provide customers with innovative and cost-effective business solutions through IT. Alongside their hardware and application software divisions, Genesis’ four-strong development team are able to undertake every aspect of consultancy, software design, development, installation and support. They work closely with their customers to create a competitive advantage using rapidly emerging technologies such as mobile app development, always ensuring they provide a versatile and reliable platform for your information systems that can adapt to changing business priorities. Luke Pykett, marketing manager at Genesis, said: “There is no doubt we have seen a lot of growth in the mobile app sector with more businesses using them to both promote and improve the functionality of their business.
“More businesses are becoming aware of the power of apps and how they work. “Our relationship with many of the key technology providers ensures we can offer expert independent advice on the most advantageous networking, hardware and software solutions for your organisation.
“Most companies use us as a one-stop shop for their full IT support package.”
Genesis originally started offering IT support to businesses in the area but quickly grew and added services and products. It now offers accounting, payroll, CRM packages including Sage and Pegasus, and document management solutions, as well as network security, cabling, telephone systems, software development, dynamic mobile optimised websites and e-commerce Ice Co and Robinson Contract Services Ltd.
The Cocktail Bar app designed for The Ice Co, which supplies ice products to supermarkets, allows users to select the alcoholic drinks they have before the app displays what cocktails can be made from the available drinks. Nick Cartwright, group IT manager at The Ice Co, said: “We commissioned Genesis to create our first app, with our main aim to create awareness for our brand, engage our customers and, most of all, to give the public a great cocktail recipe app.“This has been a great addition to our social media strategy, which is giving us another avenue to engage and know our customers, while cementing The Ice Co's reputation as Europe’s largest and most modern Ice manufacturer.”
Genesis also designed an app for Driffield-based Robinson Contract Services Ltd to streamline its delivery process of contracts. Julia Cook, managing director of Robinson Contract Services Ltd, said: “Genesis built a bespoke haulage delivery system that links in real-time collections and deliveries from the driver’s in-cab tablet to our main system in the office. “It also provides sat-nav information; telephone and email functions; and a basic tracking system. “It allows for much more efficient management of our haulage fleet, as well as saving the administrative burden of entering weigh ticket data. “It is proving invaluable in providing accurate and immediate information to both ourselves and our customers.”
